Alvarez vs Trout switches to April 20
WBC light middleweight Saul "Canelo" Alvarez will now meet WBA holder Austin "No Doubt" Trout on April 20 where the unification fight will headline in San Antonio, Texas.
Initially the fight was scheduled to take place on the Floyd Mayweather vs Robert Guerrero bill, however, that hinged on Mayweather signing a contract stipulating Alvarez would be his next opponent as long as they were both victorious on May 4. Mayweather would not sign when it came down to it, so Alvarez, Mexico's biggest star, did not want to lend his name, star power or economic muscle to Mayweather's pay-per-view event. So promoters Golden boy promotions shifted Alvarez-Trout to April 20.
The WBC featherweight title fight between holder Daniel Ponce De Leon and underfeated Abner Mares, who is moving up in weight after vacating his WBC super bantamweight belt, will now co-feature on the Mayweather-Guerrero bill at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
