Australian boxer David Browne Jr dies in hospital four days after bout
Australian boxer David Browne Jr has died in hospital four days after being knocked out during a bout in Sydney on Friday.
Browne Jr was knocked unconscious by Filipino opponent Carlo Magali in the last 30 seconds of a 12-round super featherweight contest. He regained consciousness but later collapsed and was rushed to hospital in a critical condition, suffering from a brain injury.
The 28-year-old father of two remained in a coma until his family made the decision to turn off his life support on Tuesday after he was unable to recover from his injuries.
Browne's death comes just six months after Australian boxer Braydon Smith, a 23-year-old law student, died from injuries sustained in a defeat to Filipino John Moralde in a featherweight bout in Queensland.
The Australian Medical Association (AMA) has called for a ban on boxing following Browne's death.
