Avanesyan outpoints aging Mosley
Russia's David Avanesyan (22-1-1, 11 KOs) outpointed 44-year-old 'Sugar' Shane Mosley (49-10-1, 41 KOs) by a 12 round unanimous decision on Saturday night at the Gila River Arena in Glendale, Arizona.
Avanesyan caught the former three-weight world champion with heavy blows throughout the fight and he was awarded scores of 114-113, 117-110, and 117-110.
The 27-year-old Russian was landing hard shots to head and body in the early rounds while Mosley jabbed on the back foot.
Mosley was throwing more power punches as the fight progressed, but he was getting beat to the punch and Avanesyan rocked him at the end of the eighth with a powerful left hook.
The American lost a point in the 10th for a low blow after several warnings from the referee, having previously floored Avanesyan in the third with a shot below the belt.
Mosley had his moments late on but he no longer had the energy to sustain any attack and Avanesyan continued to get the better of the action.
With the win, Avanesyan retained his nterim WBA welterweight title and will now face the winner of the world title fight between WBA champion Keith Thurman and Shawn Porter on June 25.
For Mosley, this really should be his last fight, but he may continue fighting and beat lesser opposition. However, as far as chasing a world title, it's over.
