South African boxing legend Baby Jake Matlala has passed away at the age of 51.

He died on Saturday at the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital.

The 4ft 10in tall light flyweight fighter – the shortest ever world champion - had been admitted to hospital on numerous occasions over the past few years with complications related to pneumonia.

With a total of 68 fights (53 wins and 2 draws), he was the only South African boxer to have won four world titles.

His death came just days after the passing of Nelson Mandela. He presented his WBU belt to Mandela after his fight to Juan Herrera.
