Schaefer lines up Mayweather vs Canelo for September 14
Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer has insisted his top priority is to set up a September 14 fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0) and Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (42-0-1) on a Showtime Pay Per View extravaganza at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
Mayweather is coming off a unanimous decision victory over Robert Guerrero to retain his WBC welterweight title last weekend, while Alvarez scored a unanimous decision over Austin Trout on April 20 to retain his WBC and become WBA light middleweight champion.
"Canelo made it clear to us with Austin Trout that he wanted Austin Trout, and he made it clear to us that he wants Floyd Mayweather," said Schaefer. "Hopefully it will be Mayweather and Canelo on Sept 14."
Mayweather neither dismissed nor confirmed that Alvarez would be next, stating "Yes I'll be back in September."
"I'm closer to 40 then 21, so I feel like I'm in a position to take some time off, talk it over with (advisor) Al Haymon, talk it over with my father and the rest of my team, and see what I can come up with," said Mayweather.
"He's (Alvarez) a young guy and Floyd Mayweather's not going to duck or dodge anyone. I'm not in a rush. Canelo Alvarez is a helluva fighter."
