Cotto hammers Geale

WBC middleweight champion Miguel Cotto (40-4, 33 KOs) dominated former two-time world champion Daniel Geale (31-4, 16 KOs) with ease in stopping him in the 4th round on Saturday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

The bout was contested at a catch weight of 157 pounds with Cotto weighing in at 153.6 while the Australian challenger weighed in at exactly 157 pounds at Friday's weigh-in. Geale had rehydrated and was much bigger than the naturally smaller Cotto by fight time but the size advantage did not matter in the end.

The Puero Rican fighter took charge from the start landing punches to the the body and head. The 34-year-old Cotto continued his assaults and sent Geale, 34, to the canvas with a powerful left hook in the 4th round. As soon as Geale got up, Cotto went for the finish and nailed him with more hard shots that dropped Geale for the second time. He got up again but he was done and told referee Harvey Dock that he’d had enough before the bout was halted at 1:28 of the round.

Now Cotto looks set for a megafight with Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, likely in September.
