WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (29-0, 26 KO’s) overpowered Ghanaian challenger Osumanu Adama (22-4, 16 KO’s) on the way to a 7th round stoppage on Saturday night at the Salle des etoiles, in Monte Carlo, Monaco.
The Kazakhstan bomber knocked Adama down three times in the fight and had his face badly swelled up by the time the fight was halted. Adama was knocked down in the 1st, 6th and 7th rounds.
The referee Luis Pabon halted the fight at 1:20 of the 7th after Golovkin staggered Adama with a left hook to the head.
Golovkin landed a crushing right hand to the head to put Adama on the canvas at the end of the 1st round. Adama wasn’t ready for the kind of power that Golovkin hit him with, and he immediately went down. Golovkin landed a huge left hook to the head that knocked Adama down again in the 6th.
Adama got up from it, but he was in survival mode for the remainder of the 6th. He was down again from a left jab in the 7th for another count before a left hook prompted the referee to stop the fight.
It is the 16th consecutive stoppage for Golovkin as he makes the 10th defence of his WBA belt.
"I feel terrific, I'm very happy with my performance," Golovkin said. "From the opening round I was comfortable with the fight and felt good about my power and the pace of the fight. He was a tough opponent but I was never hurt."
