Golovkin to fight Willie Monroe Jr on May 16

IBO/WBA and interim WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (32-0, 29 KOs) will defend his titles against slick southpaw Willie Monroe Jr (19-1, 6 KOs) on May 16 at The Forum in Inglewood, California.

Golovkin defeated Martin Murray by an 11th round knockout in February in his last outing.

The Kazakh fighter has now knocked out 19 opponents in a row and is still in a situation where none of the other top 160 pound fighters want to face him.

It appears WBC champion Miguel Cotto is in no rush to fight him, and WBO champion Andy Lee and Peter Quillin are fighting each other.

So American contender Monroe, who has won nine fights in a row since suffering an eight-round split decision loss to journeyman Darnell Boone in 2011, takes the challenge.

If Golovkin beats Monroe, as expected, it will be his 14th consecutive title defence of the WBA belt, and would tie him with Carlos Monzon for second place in middleweight history. Bernard Hopkins holds the division record at 20 defences.
