Guerrero gun arrest should not affect Mayweather fight

Robert Guerrero's May 4 fight with Floyd Mayweather should still go ahead despite him being arrested on gun charges on Thursday.

Guerrero, 30, was detained at John F Kennedy international airport in New York and charged with illegal possession of an unloaded firearm, after attemping to check in for a flight to Las Vegas with an unloaded pistol and three unloaded bullet magazines in his luggage.

Preliminary proceedings in Guerrero's case were held the same day, but his next hearing on the matter will not come until after he challenges Mayweather for the WBC welterweight title in Las Vegas on May 4.

Promoters Golden Boy pointed out that Guerrero informed airport security of his pistol, which they say was kept secured in a case prior to his check-in. The promoters also claim that the firearm is legally owned by the boxer in his home state of California.

Illegal possession of an unloaded firearm was recently upgraded to a felony in New York State, meaning Guerrero could face a prison sentence if found guilty.
