Guillermo Rigondeaux reinstated as WBA 'super' champion

Unbeaten super bantamweight Guillermo Rigondeaux (16-0, 10 KOs) has been reinstated as the WBA's 'super' champion.

The Cuban was originally stripped of the belt last November due to inactivity and Scott Quigg was promoted to WBA 'super' champion.

IBF champion Carl Frampton outpointed Quigg in a unification clash in February to capture the WBA title, but was subsequently stripped of the belt for failing to negotiate a first defence against Rigondeaux.

The WBA have now decided to reinstate Rigondeaux as 'super' champion and will allow him to make a defence against Jazza Dickens or WBA bantamweight champion Jamie McDonnell.

According to WBA president Gilberto Mendoza, Rigondeaux and his team put together a legal suit asking for reinstatement as the champion and the WBA accepted.

"We had differences with Rigondeaux's team, but we mediated," Mendoza said to ESPN Deportes.
"They hired a legal adviser and then after negotiations we came to the decision that he would be reinstated as a super champion. He was the undisputed champion, but given that he didn't have a fight for a long time, he was declared the champion in recess.

"They asked us, in that agreement, to have the opportunity to fight an opponent, who was not a world champion - that was what we wanted.
"We hope it would come against James Dickens or Jamie McDonnell, who was also mentioned."

In addition, interim champion Moises Flores will face Paulus Ambunda, while Nehomar Cermeno and Jun Qiu Xiao fight for the vacant WBA 'regular' belt.

"What we are going to do now is a kind of tournament," said Mendoza. "The winner of the fight between Rigondeaux and Dickens or McDonnell will go to the winner of Flores and Ambunda, and then the winner of these fights will go to the winner of Cermeno and Xiao, and what we will have is a single champion."
