Former undisputed middleweight champion Jermain Taylor has been arrested on charges of first-degree domestic battery and aggravated assault following the shooting of his cousin in Arkansas on Tuesday.

According to Pulaski County Sheriff's Department spokesman Lt. Carl Minden, the unidentified cousin and another man came to Taylor's home in suburban Little Rock, early in the evening and an altercation ensued.

Minden said the police responded to a 911 call from Taylor's wife.

"Mr Taylor's cousin and another individual came to his residence, and there was some sort of altercation," Minden said.

"At some point, Mr. Taylor retrieved a handgun and fired several rounds. His cousin was struck multiple times."

Reports have suggested that Taylor’s cousin is in a serious condition in hospital, but the other man was not injured.

The 36-year-old American is scheduled to challenge Sam Soliman for the IBF middleweight title on October 8.

Taylor will appear before a judge on Wednesday.
