Marquez out of Mayweather-Guerrero card
Former two-division world champion Rafael Marquez needs to have surgery for gallstones, which forced him to withdraw from his scheduled 10-round super bantamweight fight against Leo Santa Cruz on the Floyd Mayweather-Robert Guerrero undercard at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on May 4.
Santa Cruz (23-0-1), who recently relinquished his IBF bantamweight title in order to move up in weight, will remain on the card against a yet to be determined opponent.
Marquez (41-8), the younger brother of superstar Juan Manuel Marquez, is best known for his riveting four fights with Israel Vazquez. But the 37-year-old seems past his prime now coming off a ninth round knockout loss to former super flyweight world champion Cristian Mijares, in October.
Floyd Mayweather's next defence of his WBC welterweight title against Robert Guerrrero on May 4 will be screened live on BoxNation.
