Martinez dethrones Salido in hard-fought points win

Roman Martinez (29-2-2, 17 KOs) outpointed Orlando Salido (42-13-2, 29 KOs) to win the WBO super featherweight title by unanimous decision on Saturday night at the Coliseo Jose Miguel Agrelot in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Martinez dropped Salido twice in the bout on the way to winning by scores of 114-111, 115-110 and 116-109.

Salido came out firing but Martinez soon utilized his height and reach advantage, setting the Mexican up at the end of his right hand for the first knockdown in the third round.

Salido came back strongly in the fourth but was sent to the canvas again from the Puerto Rican's right hand at the end of the fifth.

The champion battled back and was doing a good job in the later rounds, but was deducted a point for a low blow in the 11th. The visitor continued to pile on the punches in the 12th, however, he was never able to land the KO punch.

Martinez won the WBO belt for the third time.
