Muira decisions Thompson to retain WBC title

Japan's Takashi Muira (26-2-2) retained the WBC super featherweight title, defeating hometown challenger Sergio Thompson (31-3) by unanimous decision on Saturday at the Plaza de Toros in Cancun, Mexico.

A hard right hand put Thompson down in the second round and the Mexican was down again in the sixth but returned the favour putting the champion down in round 8.

Muira deserved to get the nod with scores of 114-110, 114-111 and 113-112, but Thompson's courage and sheer grit made it a torid first defence of the title Muira won when stopping Mexican Gamaliel Diaz in April.
