Roman Gonzalez to defend title against McWilliams Arroyo on Golovkin card
WBC flyweight champion Roman "Chocolatito" Gonzalez (44-0, 38 KOs) will fight Puerto Rican challenger McWilliams Arroyo (16-2, 14 KOs) on the undercard of the Gennady Golovkin-Dominic Wade fight on April 23 at the Forum in Inglewood, California.
It will be the third straight time Gonzalez as appeared on the same card as Golovkin.
Each time the Nicaraguan fighter scored dominant wins. He demolished former WBC light flyweight champion Edgar Sosa in the second round last May and then halted former unified world flyweight champion Brian Viloria in a ninth round in October.
"Having Roman paired with Gennady was a winning combination in 2015, as both fought in front of huge crowds in Los Angeles and New York City," said Tom Loeffler, managing director of K2 Promotions.
Gonzalez, a former strawweight and light flyweight world champion, is regarded by many as boxing's pound-for-pound king following the retirement of Floyd Mayweather and he will be defending his belt for the fifth time against Arroyo, who lost his previous world title attempt when challenging IBF flyweight champion Amnat Ruenroeng in September 2014.
Arroyo floored Ruenroeng in the sixth round before losing a split-decision on the champion's home turf in Thailand.
Arroyo's twin brother, McJoe Arroyo, won the IBF super flyweight title last year and he will be aiming to join him as a world champion.
