Selby eyes world title shot after points win
Lee Selby (19-1, 7 KO’s) defeated Romulo Koasicha (21-4, 12 KO’s) by a 12 round unanimous decision in their WBC International featherweight title eliminator on Saturday night at the Motorpoint Arena, Cardiff, Wales.
The final judges scores were 119-109, 119-109 and 119-110.
Selby, 27, was mostly in control of the fight but his 23-year-old Mexican opponent did find his way through with some good shots in the middle rounds.
But the Welshman regained control for the remaining rounds with some accurate combinations.
Selby is likely to have another fight or two against respected ranked opponents before getting his world title chance.
Also on the card, former WBO light heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly (27-1, 13 KO’s) stopped journeyman Shawn Corbin (17-5, 12 KO’s) in the 2nd round of his cruiserweight debut.
Super middleweight contender Paul Smith (35-3, 20 KO’s) defeated David Sarabia (7-4-2, 2 KO’s) by a 2nd round TKO. Smith was tagging Sarabia until the referee stopped the fight with Sarabia still on his feet.
Smith will now likely be facing WBO super middleweight champion Arthur Abraham next.
His younger sibling super middleweight prospect Callum Smith (11-0, 9 KO’s) defeated Tobias Webb (14-2-1, 2 KO’s) by a 2nd round knockout. Smith knocked Webb down four times in the 2nd round with hurtful body shots.
