Gavin outclasses Vassell
Frankie Gavin (16-0) added the Commonwealth title to his British belt with an impressive 7th round stoppage of Denton Vassell (20-1) on Friday night at the Olympia in Liverpool.
Gavin ended Vassell's previously unbeaten record with a clinical display, the Birmingham fighter inflicting a suspected broken jaw on his opponent in the process.
Gavin dominated the opening three rounds with some precise punching but Vassell briefly came into the bout forcing the British champion onto the ropes in the 5th.
Gavin reasserted his dominance in the next two rounds. A big shot inflicted major damage on Vassell's jaw and following a doctor's inspection, the fight was stopped after the 7th round.
On the undercard, Paul Butler beat Najah Ali to defend his Commonwealth super flyweight title with a 4th round stoppage and raised hopes of a world title shot, while Liam Smith, Joe Murray and Stephen Smith also all won.
