Thompson halts Price again

British heavyweight David Price (15-2) suffered a second loss to Tony Thompson (37-3) in a dramatic fight on Saturday night at the Echo Arena in Liverpool.

American veteran Thompson, who stopped Price in round two of their first contest in February, produced a flurry of unanswered punches to end the rematch in round five.

Price appeared to be on course for revenge on his 30th birthday when he floored Thompson, 41, in the second round, however the Maryland boxer recovered and came storming back to silence the partisan crowd.

Price was unbeaten in 15 pro fights with 13 KOs prior to his first meeting with Thompson.

This time the British and commonwealth champion had enlisted the help of former world heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis, who worked closely with the Scouser in his preparations for this fight.

Understandably, Price started cautiously. Southpaw Thompson landed a good left early on but when the British fighter let his hands go, he landed with two decent right hands towards the end of the opening round.

Price thudded home two right hands which Thompson took well at the start of the 2nd round. Thompson was having success of his own though, closing the distance well to land shots. A left hook by Price hurt the American as he waded in at last before throwing Thompson over.

A right hand landed flush on Thompson's chin to send him to the canvas but the former world title challenger, who lost to Wladimir Klitschko in 2008 and 2012, did well to rise to his feet at referee Marcus McDonnell's count of nine before the bell saved him.

Price's confidence was growing and another right had Thompson struggling on the ropes. 'The Tiger' fought back but was then rocked by a left uppercut. Price's momentum waned in the 4th as Thompson, who had been targeting the body in a bid to slow Price down, clearly hurt the Englishman with a big right to the midriff. Price looked to be tiring and in danger before the bell signalled the end of the round. Thompson pounced in the 5th with several hooking rights and lefts. With Price trapped in the corner the referee stepped in to give a standing count after several big shots, but with Price clearly in no state to continue, he waved off the fight.
