Tyron Zeuge wins technical decision over Isaac Ekpo to retain WBA title
WBA super middleweight champion Tyron Zeuge (20-0-1, 11 KOs) won a fifth round technical decision over Isaac Ekpo (31-3, 24 KOs) to retain his title on Saturday night at the MBS Arena in Potsdam, Germany.
Unbeaten German Zeuge was getting the better of the Nigerian challenger before he clashed heads with Ekpo in the third round and suffered a large cut over his right eye. The referee allowed the fight to continue and Ekpo had some success as he went on the attack in rounds four and five.
The ring doctor checked the cut in the fifth and the bout was ended.
Zeuge won by scores of 49-46, 48-47 and 49-47.
Zeuge captured the WBA belt by stopping Italy's Giovanni De Carolis in the 12th round in November 2016 and was making his first world title defence.
Ekpo was fighting for a world title for the second time affer he was outpointed by then WBO 168lb champion Robert Stieglitz in October 2013.
